The first week of the new year

Let’s see if I can kickstart my writing mojo with a roundup post of what I’ve been up to the past few weeks.

2016 was many things, but a “good year” it wasn’t, not really. Although we were very fortunate in many ways (for which I am absolutely grateful and humble), we also had our fair share of shitty things. Personally, I was pretty excited to usher in the new year and get going with some good things, especially after 2016 took one last cheap shot, which resulted in us letting our housekeeper (whom I was very fond of) go.

We were, however, fortunate to spend a couple of days at Theewaterskloof dam with friends and family, celebrating the New Year with a fireworks display and social braai. It was so lovely! But the heat was sweltering at the dam (averaging 30 – 35°C) and after 2 days spent boating, swimming and sipping drinks, I have a killer tan (I am pretty sun hardy and retain a tan easily).

We’ve also had KB’s eldest daughter and husband visiting us for the past 2 weeks and they left last night, so I had the whole house to myself for the first time since I went on leave last year (KB went to play golf). And I won’t lie, as much as I love them, it is nice to have the house back to normal, but boy I worked hard today!

I repacked the grocery cupboard, the Tupperware cupboard (though there is no actual Tupperware in it), the casserole and miscellaneous bits’ cupboard, and the cupboard under the sink. Then I cleaned out and repacked the kitchen drawers before cleaning out the fridge. I also repacked the towels and the linen and did ALL the laundry (bedding and towels included). Last but not least, I made bird seed feeders after going to gym this afternoon. Yup, I told you, I worked hard today!

The Christmas tree is also packed away (boo…). So pretty much all traces of the holiday season are gone. On the bright side, I came across this old photo of me and my brother as kids at Christmas time and it made me smile! And our Frangipani trees are in full bloom, they have such a lovely scent and always remind me of summer days.

Monday is back to work for me, so I felt the urge to get organised. Now all that’s left to do is to sort out my study bits and enjoy the last weekend of the holidays with KB before I hit the ground running. Here’s to an exciting 2017!

  1. A lovely round up Nicky and glad you got your writing mojo back. I seem to have turned Instagram into a daily blog post as I try find inspiration in the simplicity of life. Your Frangipani is beautiful.
That picture of you and your brother so cute. You were blonde?? Chad was also blonde until about 3, now you would never say.
Awful that you had to let your housekeeper go, they do become part of your family, in our case closer than family.
Funny that, today I also cleaned like a demon, because I have been slack except for laundry which never ends.
Hope 2017 is a better year for you. I read something about 2017 being a year of new beginnings and 2016 a nine year or something which meant it was a bad year. We can only hope

    • Hi Dianne! Thanks – I’m trying to get back in to the swing of writing 🙂 Yes, I was a blonde until about 10 years old, though you wouldn’t say so now! I’m pretty upsr about letting our housekeeper go, but it is what it is 🙁 Now the search for a new trustworthy person who fits in with our family and requirements (uurgghh… I’m not looking forward to it). Seems yesterday was a good day for organising and cleaning! Thanks for the good wishes, I hope 2017 is good for you guys too x
